Outdoor Digital Signage and LED in Indian Conditions
Share
For outdoor signage and LED in India, choose first for brightness in direct sunlight, then for weather protection, operating temperature and how easily a failed module can be replaced. Outdoor products state brightness in nits, protection as an IP rating and the temperature range, so compare those figures with the conditions at the site.
How bright does an outdoor screen need to be?
Direct sun overpowers ordinary displays, so outdoor screens are far brighter than indoor ones. A window-facing display such as the Samsung SL46B offers 1,500 nits. Outdoor LED cabinets go much higher: the Unilumin Umate LM O offers 5,500 to 6,500 nits, the Unilumin Umate SF up to 10,000 nits, the Absen A1025 10,000 nits and the Xtreme Media Earth up to 15,000 nits. Choose from the amount of sun the screen faces and its direction, and remember that more brightness also means more power.
What do IP ratings mean?
An IP rating has two digits. The first shows protection against dust and solid objects, and the second shows protection against water. The Unilumin Umate SF lists front and rear IP66 protection, the Absen A1025 lists IP66, and the Absen JP5 Pro lists IP65/IP54, where two ratings are given for the two sides of the cabinet. Read what the rating applies to, because front and rear can differ, and choose a rating that suits monsoon rain and dust at your site.
Which temperatures can the display handle?
Indian summers put screens under heavy heat, and the sun adds more. Operating range is on the product page. The JP5 Pro is rated from -20 to +50 °C and the Absen A1025 from -30 to +50 °C. Compare the upper figure with the highest temperature at your site, and include the heat that builds up inside enclosures and in direct sun. Ask the supplier how the display manages heat and whether it reduces brightness at high temperature.
Which outdoor products suit which jobs?
The job decides the format. For shop fronts and kiosks, outdoor LCD signage such as the Samsung LH46OHFPKBC, with its weatherproof design and anti-reflective coating, and the Dahua LDV55-EAO400K 55 inch vertical display, suit portrait content. For facades, hoardings and large screens, outdoor LED cabinets suit best. Pitch follows viewing distance, so the Xtreme Media Aegis offers 4 mm and 5 mm pitches at up to 4,500 nits, while a roadside screen seen from far away can use a coarse pitch such as the 10 mm of the Absen A1025. Our guide to pixel pitch explains the match.
Can one product work indoors and outdoors?
Some products cover both. The Absen PL V3 Series is rated 5,000 nits for outdoor use and 1,500 nits indoors on its PL3.9 Pro V3 model. That suits events and rentals that move between venues, but permanent outdoor installs are usually specified for the outdoor case alone.
How will the display be serviced?
Outdoor screens are harder to reach, so plan serviceability. Look for front or rear access, and quick module replacement. The Absen A1025 lists a 10-second module swap. Plan how engineers will reach the screen, for example by gantry or lift, and who is responsible for checks. Our comparison of AMC and one-time repair covers maintenance contracts for exactly this kind of installation.
What about power and monitoring?
Outdoor screens draw significant power, and supply quality in the field varies. Plan the electrical load, surge protection and earthing with the electrician. Some products add monitoring: the Xtreme Media Earth offers Vigilant-IoT technology to watch the screen's condition. Remote monitoring helps because a failed outdoor screen is on show to the public.
How do you get an outdoor display specified correctly?
A site visit settles the direction of the sun at different times of year, the viewing distance, the mounting structure, the power, the network link for content and the access for engineers. Corporate AV supplies outdoor signage and LED across India. See our outdoor digital signage solutions, outdoor LED solutions and storefront LED solutions, browse LED displays, and open the Unilumin, Absen and Xtreme Media pages. Outdoor screens need careful structure, power and weather protection: our AV design services and AV installation services teams plan and build them, and our AV maintenance services team keeps them running.
Frequently asked questions
How bright should an outdoor LED display be?
It depends on the sun at the site. Outdoor cabinets listed on our site range from about 4,500 nits on the Xtreme Media Aegis to 10,000 nits on the Absen A1025 and up to 15,000 nits on the Xtreme Media Earth.
What IP rating do I need outdoors?
Choose a rating that protects against rain and dust at your site, and read which sides of the cabinet it applies to. Outdoor LED products listed here carry ratings such as IP65 and IP66.
Can an outdoor display take Indian summer heat?
Check the operating temperature range on the product page, for example up to +50 °C on the Absen A1025 and JP5 Pro, and compare it with the highest temperature at your site, including direct sun and enclosure heat.
Which pixel pitch suits an outdoor screen?
Pitch follows viewing distance. Screens seen from far away can use a coarse pitch such as 10 mm, while screens seen from a few metres need a finer one such as 4 mm or 5 mm.
How are outdoor LED displays maintained?
Through planned inspections and quick module replacement. Some products, such as the Absen A1025, list a 10-second module swap. Agree who checks the screen and how often.
