Understanding Pixel Pitch for LED Displays
Share
Pixel pitch is the single most important specification when choosing an LED display, and it's also the one buyers most often get wrong: usually by choosing a pitch finer (and more expensive) than the installation actually needs.
What Pixel Pitch Actually Means
Pixel pitch is the distance, in millimeters, between the centers of adjacent LEDs on a display. A pixel pitch of 2.5mm means there's 2.5mm between one LED and the next. The smaller the number, the more LEDs are packed into the same area, and the sharper the image looks up close.
The Rule of Thumb for Minimum Viewing Distance
A commonly used starting point is that minimum comfortable viewing distance in meters is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimeters. So a 2.5mm pitch display is generally comfortable to view from about 2.5 meters or further; standing closer than that, individual pixels start to become visible. This is a guideline, not an exact formula, but it's a useful sanity check before specifying a display.
Why Overspecifying Wastes Budget
Fine-pitch LED (roughly 1.5mm and below) costs significantly more than a coarser pitch, and that cost only pays off if viewers genuinely stand close to the screen: a control room operator, for example. For a video wall viewed from across a lobby or retail floor, a coarser and more cost-effective pitch delivers the same perceived sharpness at typical viewing distances.
Indoor vs Outdoor Considerations
Outdoor LED displays need to be evaluated differently, since viewing distance is usually much greater: a building facade or roadside display is seen from tens or hundreds of meters away: but brightness becomes the more critical factor, since the display needs to remain legible in direct sunlight. Outdoor-rated panels are also built to withstand rain, heat, and dust.
Matching Pitch to the Room
A control room where operators sit within a few meters of the wall justifies fine-pitch LED. A corporate lobby or retail feature wall, typically viewed from several meters back, works well with a coarser and more affordable pitch. Getting this match right is where most of the value in a proper site assessment comes from.
Specifying It Correctly
Corporate AV calculates the right pixel pitch for every LED display project based on your room's actual viewing distance, not a generic recommendation.
